Each week, the BoCoPreps.com staff will highlight a handful of active local athletes from a variety of NCAA sports, catching up on where they are in their respective collegiate careers and any recent accomplishments they may have had.


• Elena Michalski, Longmont Class of 2014: A senior at Colorado State- Pueblo, Michalski is in her second year as the starting setter for the Thunderwolves and is averaging a healthy 9.3 assists per set.

• Mikayla Martinez, Mead Class of 2014: After two successful years of at Laramie County Community College, Martinez is in second and final year at Missouri-Kansas City. She’s appeared mainly as a serve specialist in the Roos’ six matches thus far.


• David Sommers, Holy Family Class of 2014: Just getting going in his junior season at Colorado School of Mines, Sommers is looking to expand his role as a wide receiver and kick returner. He appeared in all 13 games last year for the Orediggers.


• Cassie Owens, Monarch Class of 2014: The 5-1 Florida Gators are ranked No. 9 in the D-I soccer polls, and Owens has been instrumental as a sub at the center back position. The senior got her first start of the season this past weekend against Portland, a 1-0 win.

• Kelsey Killian, Legacy Class of 2014: The Georgia Bulldogs senior has yet to score a goal this year, but she has started all six games and helped them to a 3-3 mark so far. She has started 12 games straight dating to last season.
