Football: Nederland hires first female head coach in state history

Nederland High School made history on Friday when it announced it hired Beth Buglione to take over the reigns as the head coach of the varsity football team.

“To my knowledge, this the first female high school head football coach in our state,” CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann said.

Buglione was previously the head coach, GM, president and a player for the Corvallis Pride of the Independent Women’s Football League.

Nederland went 5-3 last season in 8-man play and former athletic director Emerald Murphy declined to pick up veteran coach Aaron Jones’ contract for the 2017 school year. That led to about 50 students at Nederland Middle-Senior High to stage a walkout over the decision, and for the Boulder Valley School District to eventually hold a meeting to discuss the situation with members of the community. A petition to have coach Jones rehired garnered several hundred signatures but NMSHS administration stood behind the decision to let him go.

In April it was announced that Murphy was being reassigned to become the athletic director and assistant principal at Centaurus High School for the 2017-18 school year.
