LAFAYETTE — The result of Wednesday’s game between the Jefferson Academy and Peak to Peak girls soccer teams may go a long way toward deciding the eventual 3A Region 6 conference champion.

With Jefferson Academy and Peak to Peak ranked third and fourth, respectively, in the rankings, the game could also be a preview of a late-round state tournament matchup in May. But even with all the big-picture potential riding on the game, for all those playing on Wednesday it was just a good old local rivalry game.

At Peak to Peak, it was the visiting Jefferson Academy Jaguars (6-0-1, 1-0 Region 6) that prevailed by a score of 5-3, dealing the Pumas (4-1, 1-1 Region 6) their first loss of the season.

“We played a really good team today,” Jaguars sophomore defender Kayla Nedved said. “We knew this was going to be a really hard game and we’ve prepared for this pretty much all week. We were very fortunate to get five goals. This was a really big game and we are looking forward to continuing the season.”

The home team scored first when sophomore Ashley Buck found the net in the 18th minute. But led by a hat trick from junior Michalah Ingalls, who leads the team with six goals on the season, the Jaguars scored five unanswered goals to pull ahead.

Kristen Capan scored the Jaguars’ first goal in the 19th minute and Ingalls followed with two more to give the Jaguars a 3-1 halftime lead. Ingalls scored her third goal in the 49th minute and sophomore Mira Houck scored in the 54th minute to push her team’s lead to four goals.

“We’ve been looking to this game for the first half of the season,” Jaguars head coach Denise Sutton said. “They came back on us a little bit but even after they had a momentum-changing PK, I was proud of the way the girls responded to get the win. We’re taking it one game at a time and today was a big day.”

In the 66th minute, the Pumas were awarded a penalty kick, which senior Rebecca Thompson converted. They scored again in the 73rd minute when Buck, who leads her team with seven goals, found the net for the second time.

“I thought we came out and played a little tight,” Pumas head coach Joe Swanson said. “Our possession wasn’t there and we had a few too many panic balls. It’s a disappointing turnout but the girls battled, even late in the game. Maybe we had a little too much emotion wrapped up in it because of who we were playing.”

The Jaguars will play at Lutheran (2-3) on Thursday. Also on Thursday, the Pumas will host top-ranked Kent Denver (4-1, 1-0 Region 6) back at Peak to Peak Charter.
