FREDERICK — Friday’s 2A District 7 girls basketball semifinal between No. 1 Lyons and No. Union Colony started slowly but ended with some intense extra basketball.

It took two overtime periods to decide which team would face No. 2 Highland for the district championship on Saturday. At the end of the long and frantic game, it was the Lyons Lions who prevailed, outlasting Union Colony 39-34 at Frederick High School.

There were a ton of tense moments, but the win kept the Lions’ season going for at least one more game.

“I think the biggest thing that won us the game was our defense,” Lions senior Liz Jonjak said. “Everybody just kept playing and nobody gave up. My teammates are great and there’s no one I’d rather play with. I’m super excited to get to keep playing with them.”

Friday’s game was as low-scoring as they come.

After three quarters, each team only had 15 points. Tied again, 26-26, at the end of regulation, Madison Johnson hit a turnaround jump shot and Jonjak made two free throws with 30 seconds left in the first overtime but Union Colony’s Jessica Caro tied it again with a 3-pointer.

In the second overtime, Johnson hit another turnaround jumper in the paint, senior Maddi Maguire hit a free throw and Jonjak went 4 for 6 at the charity stripe. Meanwhile, the Lyons held Union Colony to just two points to pull away for the win.

“For the first three quarters, I felt like we were playing a good, hard game,” Lions head coach Jason Maguire said. “The shots just weren’t going down. But a lot of girls stepped up for us tonight and it was a good win. We’ve been missing some players for a big part of the season and we’ve had different girls step up all along the way.”

The Lions defeated Twin Peaks Charter in the first round of the District 7 tournament on Tuesday. Combining for well over half their team’s points, Johnson led the Lions with 17 points and Jonjak scored 13 points to keep the season alive despite the team going scoreless in the third quarter. The Lions will play Highland in the district title game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The Lions defeated Highland 40-36 in the teams’ meeting during the regular season on Jan. 17.
