BROOMFIELD — Advancing to the state tournament: Awesome.
Advancing to the state tournament at the hand of your cross-town rival: Priceless.
“When we saw the regional bracket come out, we all thought about the chance to do it again,” said Broomfield senior Matti Morales, whose Eagles less than two weeks ago dismantled Legacy 17-2. “We beat them in the regular season and we wanted to do it again when it counts.”
And they did.
Class 5A’s top-seeded Eagles, much like they did last season, breezed through the regional round without giving up a single run. They beat Denver East 15-0 in the first game and then mercy-ruled the Lightning again; this time 10-0 to move on to the state tournament next week at Aurora Sports Park.
“It’s fun to play every game and to play a good team like Legacy and beat them, it’s a good feeling,” Broomfield coach Paula Seifried said. “That’s how you know you are going in the right direction, when you can beat a good team twice.
“It was a good litmus test for us and I’m glad we had to do it, but now I’m ready for state.”
The Eagles (19-2), who will likely remain the top-seed when the CHSAA puts out the bracket on Sunday afternoon, went right to work against Legacy hurler Izzy Kelly.
With runners at first and second and two outs, Morales singled back up the middle to plate Linnie Malkin — whom the Lightning intentionally walked all four times she came to the plate — from second. Taylor Gilmore scored right behind her after centerfielder Megan Foley’s throw went to the backstop.
“We have hitters from 1-9 and it never really falls off,” said Morales, who finished with three RBIs after a two-run double to the right field fence in the fourth inning. “We are excited to be heading back to state.”
It was more than enough offense in support of Gilmore, who had the Legacy line-up off balance throughout. Gilmore gave a up a hard hit double to Foley in the second and Foley got her again in the fourth, but that was all the Lightning, who beat Castle View 14-3 to advance to the regional championship, could muster.
“I’m proud of how the girls reacted because they were a little nervous,” Seifried said. “It was a little nerve-wracking that we had to play them again, but our seniors kept them calm did a great job leading us and when they made a mistake, they just shrugged it off.”
Legacy (15-7) got a second chance to make the state tournament for the first time in three years and, despite a rocky start, took full advantage of a tired Castle View team.
The Lightning bats that were silenced by Gilmore, came to life against the Sabercats. They pounded out 23 hits and rallied from an early 4-0 hole to win a slug fest 17-10.
“These guys have worked so frickin’ hard and they made a commitment after every game to do some sort of conditioning workout, and they got tired, but now they are seeing how it pays off,” Legacy coach Dawn Gaffin said. “In these long games and in these tough (hot) conditions, it was tough.”
Foley added another four hits against the Sabercats and scored three times. Katelyn Kubitschek also had four hits and drove in four runs for the Lightning.
