LOUISVILLE — At least we know the baseball gods have a great sense of humor.

One day after Fairview had one of those days in Greeley, getting swept by the GoJo’s — including a 15-run inning in Game 2 — the Knights were on the receiving end of the good fortune on Wednesday against Monarch.

“That’s just the nature of the game,” Fairview coach Dave Castillo said. “You’ve just got to come out swinging everyday.”

The Knights pounded out 14 hits, but were also the beneficiaries of six Coyotes errors that plated six unearned runs in a 15-9 victory.

“Baseball is equal every day and the only thing you can do is control what you can control and come out and play,” Castillo continued. “And don’t let the scoreboard dictate your behavior.

“Yesterday gave these guys a little bit of a fire in their belly, and it’s nice to see 14 hits up there.”

It was a Monarch team that was coming off a stretch of 12 games in seven days that included six games in Casper, Wyoming — where they made the title game of that tournament on Sunday night — and an overnight drive on a two-lane road to Grand Junction for a double header against Gene Taylor on Monday morning.

The wear and tear showed early on.

Monarch committed two errors on the first two balls put in play, leading to a three run opening frame for the Knights.

“We just weren’t ready to play baseball in the first three innings and you are not going to win any baseball game playing like that,” said Monarch skipper Scott Weiss, who was later tossed from the game for arguing a call with the home plate umpire.

The Fairview bats came to life in the fourth inning and made the awkward line on the score board — 4 runs on just 2 hits — start to look a little better. Three straight hits to lead off the inning against Matt Hoban, including doubles from Wil Mossa and Tyler Carpenter, plated two more runs and increased the lead to 6-3.

Monarch gradually chipped away with some timely hitting off their own, notably a 2-run single by Ben Coatney in the fifth that cut the Knights lead to 8-5.

But the wheels came off for good in the seventh for Monarch. They scored seven times, once on a balked in run with the bases loaded by Andrew Morris, and got one last big hit from Jeff Erickson whose 2-run single put the final nail in the Monarch coffin.

“”With Monarch, you always have to come out ready to play and get some runs on the board,” said Erickson, who went 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs. “Timely hitting was huge for us.”

Every player in the Fairview lineup scored at least one run and eight of the nine starters recorded at least one hit.

Monarch’s Connor Flynn had a big day. He belted two home runs, including a three-run jack in the seventh that helped make the score more respectable.
