LONGMONT – Bayly Herman missed on her first chance to be the hero on senior day. When she got a second chance, she cashed in.

Herman’s tiebreaking goal in the 55th minute atoned for her misfire five minutes earlier, and the Silver Creek girls soccer team beat Holy Family 3-1 on Friday to finish the home schedule with an eye on the postseason.

The win for the Raptors (9-4-1) didn’t factor into their quest for the Northern League title. They are 5-1 in the league with a game at Mountain View on Tuesday, so Friday’s victory, their fourth in a row, simply kept their momentum going.

“It helps with our playoffs and seeding,” Herman said.

Herman did her part with two goals. She could have had a hat trick but she hit a penalty kick over the crossbar in the 50th minute with the game tied.

She atoned for it a little later when she got a long pass from Katy Foster, dribbled around a defender and beat goalkeeper Maddie Cillessen to give Silver Creek a 2-1 lead.

“She’ an incredible athlete, she’s incredibly centered and she’s incredibly resilient,” Raptors coach Pat Monacelli said. “I know when she makes a mistake she’s going to bounce right back from it. It’s unfortunate she missed the PK but that happens and the great thing she didn’t let it affect her game.”

Senior day did affect the Raptors at the start. They settled down after the first 15 minutes and started generating chances and finally broke through when Herman scored in the 38th minute to give Silver Creek a 1-0 lead.

“I pressed the goalie and I knew if I was running up on her I would get the opportunity to score,” Herman said. “She got the ball, it dropped and I hit it through our legs.”

Holy Family (4-4) tied it on freshman Nicolette Sandoval’s penalty kick in the 48th minute. She had a chance to tie it again in the 59th minute but she missed the net on another penalty kick.

“She had the goalie fooled on the next one and she hit it too hard,” coach George Connolly said.

Silver Creek senior Lexi Dageenakis put the game away when she scored on the fourth penalty kick of the game in the 78th minute.

The Tigers won’t dwell on this one game. They are 3-0 in the 4A Tri-Valley League with a showdown against 2-0 Mead on Wednesday.

“We’ve got prom (Saturday) night so you have to be careful with how much pressure you put on a game like this. Our girls know how good they are,” Connolly said. “We created a lot of chances we just didn’t finish them. When you go down 1-0 to a good team you’ve got a problem.”
