Sophia Maeda, Mead cross country: The Mavericks’ lone representative at the state cross country meet this past weekend ended up being the highest finisher of the local 4A girls contingent, turning in a sparkling time of 20 minutes, 0.69 seconds which was good for 19th place overall. The sophomore moved up 52 places from her freshman run in 2014.

Paul Roberts, Lyons cross country: Truly one of the state’s all-time best prep runners, Roberts not only became the first boys four-time cross-country champion, he also had the fastest time of Saturday’s state meet by more than 16 seconds (at 15:33.69). In four state meets, he either had the fastest or second fastest time in the meet.
