COLORADO SPRINGS – Silver Creek won its final regular season boys’ soccer match over Northridge to break a four-game losing streak and sneak into the Class 4A state playoffs as the No. 31 seed.

Waiting for the Raptors was The Classical Academy, the No. 2 seed and the state runner-up in four of the previous five seasons (three times in 3A).

TCA (15-1) scored three goals in the first 13 minutes on a cold Wednesday night and never looked back on its way to a resounding 7-0 victory in a first-round playoff game.

“I thought (TCA) was just a fantastic team,” said Silver Creek senior captain Sean Peskin. “We all played our hearts out and we left it all on the field. Not much we could have done better.”

Peskin led the Raptors (7-9) in goals scored this season with 20, but Silver Creek’s offense was a non-factor against a TCA squad that outscored its opponents 85 to 7 on the season.

The Raptors had just one shot on goal, compared to 22 for TCA.

“We could have done a better job of trying to connect passes, especially through the middle, because they were beating us through the middle most of the time,” said Silver Creek junior midfielder Josh Ehr, who had three goals and seven assists this season. “I think we did pretty well on corners, but we needed to a better job of marking them.”

Ehr had the unenviable job of marking TCA junior forward Titus Grant, who led the Titans with 23 goals and 13 assists during the regular season. Grant scored the game’s first goal less than five minutes into the match. He assisted on TCAs third goal, and added two late goals.

Five different TCA players scored goals.

“As a team we have to talk to each other more,” said Silver Creek junior forward Aldo Rico, who had eight goals and 12 assists this season. “We had a lot of effort in this game, but we have to work more as a group. A lot of us try to take it by ourselves, but we need to find the motivation to work together more.

“We knew how important this game was and we gave it everything we had, but (TCA is) just a very good team.”

Silver Creek had an up and down season. The Raptors lost four of their first five games, then won five in a row, but that was followed by a four-game losing streak before closing out the regular season with a 3-2 victory over Northridge.

“We knew we had to get on a winning streak if we were going to salvage our season,” Peskin said. “We trained hard and worked hard as a team and trusted each other, but after five wins we kind of slacked off and expected to win a little more and kind of stopped playing as much as a team and started playing as individual players again.”
