Erie softball coach Harold Simmons found the news that CHSAA had decided to move the start of the state softball tournament back a day due to heavy rains at Aurora Sports Park bittersweet.

On one hand, his Tigers were already going through their pre-state ritual and were raring to go for their original scheduled start on Friday afternoon.

But on the other hand, several members of his squad, which enters the tournament seeded second in Class 4A, were battling illness this week, so another day to get healthy isn’t a bad thing.

“Obviously it’s disappointing because we’re busy going through all of our state rituals and our adrenaline is flowing and we’re ready to go and ready to play,” said Simmons, whose team brings a 20-2 mark into the tournament. “But we’ve been a little sick this week and this is a chance to get us a little healthier, and we welcome that.”

CHSAA released a statement late Thursday afternoon announcing it had decided to push back the start of the tournament from Friday to Saturday due to continuing rainfall at Aurora Sports Park.

CHSAA said the tournament will begin Saturday, with first round games in 4A/5A scheduled for 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. followed by quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m. The 3A tournament will begin at 12:15 p.m.

Semifinals will be held Sunday, starting at 10 a.m. with the 4A/5A championship games slated for 1:30 p.m.

Erie is one of three teams from the BoCoPreps area in the 4A tournament which will all begin play at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday. The No. 2 seeded Tigers will play No. 15 Discovery Canyon; Frederick (17-5-1) is the 11th seed and will face No. 6 Berthoud and Silver Creek (15-7-1) earned the No. 10 seed and will face No. 7 Windsor. If both Silver Creek and Erie win in the first round, they will face each other in the quarterfinals, slated for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Broomfield (16-5) is the lone BoCo team in the 5A tournament and earned a No. 3 seed. The Eagles will take on No. 14 Pomona in the first round.

Simmons said the postponement won’t change his team’s preparation, as the Tigers met for a team dinner on Thursday followed by a viewing of the movie “Remember the Titans.”

“It doesn’t change much for us,” Simmons said. “It’s business as usual.”
