Lyons’ Sierra Tucker sprints to a third-place finish during the regional cross country championships at Lyons High School Thursday.

LYONS – CeAnn Udovich and Sierra Tucker of Lyons are both looking forward to the Class 2A cross country state championships on Oct. 31.

Udovich, who has battled injuries, hopes to match her second-place finish as a sophomore last season. Tucker, who finished fifth last season, is looking to finish her senior season on a high note.

But first, both Udovich and Tucker had to qualify for state. They did that during Thursday’s 2A Region 1 championships on their home course at Lyons High School.

“CeAnne and I went out together for the first half and I just tried to see what I could do at the end,” Tucker said. “We’re looking to finish as high as we possibly can together and as a team. We’re hoping that we can all step up and we’re excited to see how it goes.”

With a time of 20 minutes, 35 seconds, Tucker placed third behind Heritage Christian’s Rebekah and Rachel Rairdon. Udovich placed seventh in 21:01.

With a team score of 26 points, the Lyons girls also took second place in the team scoring behind Heritage Christian’s impressive seven-point total. Looking ahead to the state meet, which the Lions girls won last year, it was a satisfactory end to the regular season.

“We were just going for a good finish so we could feel good about our last race of the season before state,” Tucker said.

In the boys race, Lyons’ three-time defending 2A state champion Paul Roberts took first place with a time of 16:06. Lyons teammate Joel Such (18:16) took fifth to help the three-time defending state champions Lions win the Region 1 meet.

With the top 40 percent of both girls and boys teams qualifying for the 2A state meet, both Lions teams will be back to defend their titles next Saturday. The Shining Mountain boys team placed fourth and qualified.

Also at Lyons High School on Thursday, the Peak to Peak boys and girls both qualified for state out of the 3A Region 3 competition.
