LONGMONT — With the first five weeks of the season in the books, it’s looking more and more like the Longmont football team might have what it takes to get back to the Class 4A state title game.

Ranked second in the Colorado AP Media Poll, the 2014 4A runners-up have completed a non-conference schedule that included four double-digit wins over preseason top-10 teams. With a 48-13 win over Silver Creek on Friday night, the Trojans added a satisfying cross-town rivalry victory to their list.

“We’ve always been cross-town rivals and this is only the second time we’ve played them in football,” Longmont senior Eli Sullivan said. “We just try to come out like we’re the underdogs every week no matter who it is across the field from us. They were the home team today and our fans were over on the away side of the stadium, but we won the field today.”

Longmont now has a 2-0 edge in the young rivalry, which began last season with a 42-21 Trojans win.

In Friday’s game, Longmont (5-0) led by just one point after the first quarter but exploded in the second. Tailback Conlan Berger scored on a 5-yard run, Sullivan ran in a score from two yards out and cornerback Cooper Rothe returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown. The Trojans trotted off the shared district stadium at Longmont High with a 28-6 halftime lead.

“We came out and played hard but we also made some mistakes,” Trojans senior quarterback David Speidel said. “But we feel like we have the best O-line in the state and they came off the ball firing and aggressive. It was a cross-town rival, the stadium was electric, the rain, the hail, all of it just made it a good night for football.”

Sullivan, who finished with 144 total yards of offense and made one of Longmont’s three interceptions, was the Trojans’ big-play man in Week 5.

Silver Creek (1-4) made three consecutive 3A state championship game appearances from 2011-13, defeating Rifle to claim the title in 2012. But the Raptors have won just four games since moving up to 4A last season and have only a 36-29 win over Discovery Canyon in this year’s season opener to their credit thus far in 2015.

“I just feel like we never gave ourselves a chance,” Silver Creek head coach Mike Apodaca said. “Even through the first half of the quarter, we had four or five penalties and we were still in a 7-6 game with a very good football team. But we couldn’t get out of our own way, unfortunately. We’re going to have to figure out how to do that real fast.”

In his first game as the starting quarterback, Silver Creek’s Anthony Kasper ran for 119 yards on 32 carries and scored both of the Raptors’ touchdowns.

Longmont begins its 4A Longs Peak League schedule at home against Loveland (2-3) next Friday. Silver Creek will open 4A Northern League play at Mountain View (2-2) on Thursday.
