GYMNASTS TO KNOW
Maddie Barkow, Jr., Niwot: An accomplished diver as well. Finished third on the floor and the vault last season.
Rachel Dillmann, Sr., Legacy/Mountain Range: Finished fourth in the all-around competition last season with a score of 37.9.
Sarah Holbrook, Sr., Broomfield: With a nagging back injury, she will try to return to the form of her sophomore season that saw her finish second in the all-around.
Marissa Koski, Jr., Niwot: A member of a deep Cougars squad that can make a run at a 4A title. She finished top seven in three individual events last season.
Nicki Verheyen, Jr., Broomfield: One of a number of Eagles that should have a chance to compete in the all-around competition. Strength is on the beam, where she finished fourth last season.
Regional meets to be held on Oct. 31.
State meet: Nov. 6-7 at Thornton High School.
Coach: Erika Taga (sixth year).
Last year: Class 5A state runner-up.
Returning state qualifiers: Sarah Holbrook (Sr.; state champion on balance beam); Nicki Verheyen (Jr., fourth on balance beam).
Others to watch: Heather Betz (Sr.); Abby Holbrook (So.); Heidi Liles (So.); Nicole Redmund (So.).
Outlook: Said Taga: “Only eight veterans return to our team of 20, so a lot of new faces make this year exciting. We lost both Heidi and Nicole to injuries midseason last year (only getting Nicole back on bars at state) so we are very excited to have them back in the lineup. Very optimistic about our potential but have to keep everyone healthy.”
LEGACY/MOUNTAIN RANGE MUSTANGS
Coach: Diane Clark (third year).
Last year: Third at 5A state finals.
Returning state qualifiers: Rachel Dillmann (Sr.; fourth in the all-around).
Others to watch: Abby Crosier (Jr.); Natalie Prestwich (Jr.).
Outlook: Said Clark, the longtime Broomfield coach who graduated five very good seniors off of last years team that was just .1 point away from Broomfield in second: “Our goal is to keep improving all season long. I expect to start out pretty weak, but hope to improve a lot throughout the season and be competing in the state meet again this year.”
Coach: Mallorie Lang (eighth year).
Last season: Third at Class 4A finals.
Returning state qualifiers: Maddie Barkow (Jr.; third on floor and third on vault); Alexis Carroll (Jr.; fifth on vault and 8th on beam); Marissa Koski (Jr.; sixth on beam, seventh on vault, and second on bars); Lilli Martin (So.; 10th on vault); Hannah McDonald (So.; eighth on vault); Amelia Sears (Jr.; eighth on beam).
Other to watch: Lindsey Chohon (Fr.); Ila Katechis (Sr.); Logan Kuskie (Fr.)
Outlook: On paper, the Cougars look like legitimate contenders for the 4A title. They have depth, they have experience and they have a roster of girls that is not at all wowed by the big stage of state. “I think everyone wants to make it back to state and improve on what we did last year,” Lang said. “I think our goal is going to remain the same of yes everyone wants to win state but we still have a long season ahead of us and we want the girls to perform to the best of their ability, and as long as they do that we are happy. “
