2015 FAIRVIEW KNIGHTS

COACH: Tom McCartney (23rd year, 145-97).

LAST YEAR: 11-1, lost 71-29 to Ralston Valley in the Class 5A quarterfinals.

RETURNING STARTERS: James Cortese (Sr., 6-2, 185, DB/WR); Kailash Graham-Bell (Sr., 6-6, 225, DE/TE); Jordan Karels (Sr., 6-2, 178, DB/WR); TJ Kebede (Sr., 5-9, 220, DL/TB); Carlo Kemp (Sr., 6-3, 255, LB/TE); David McWilliams (Jr., 5-10, 175, WR).

OTHERS TO WATCH: Dmitri Brown (Sr., 5-8, 175, LB); Thomas Creese (Sr., 6-3, 195, QB); Colt Futter (So., 5-11, 170, OL); Max Gelband (Sr., 5-11, 180, DB); Duncan Heath (Jr., 5-11, 240, OL/DL); Angel Ibarra (Jr., 5-11, 200, OL); Mariano Kemp (So., 5-9, 230, DE); Cristian Martinez (Sr., 6-0, 215, LB); Winston Mosley (Sr., 6-1, 225, OL); Quinn Sharp (Jr., 6-1, 155, WR); Luke Smagac (Sr., 6-0, 170, DB); Connor Twist (Jr., 5-9, 165, WR); Tommy Wakefield (Jr., 6-1, 180, WR).

DIVISION-I/COLLEGE PROSPECTS: C. Kemp, Kebede, Graham-Bell, McWilliams.

MUST-SEE GAME: Oct. 2 vs. Monarch, 7 p.m.

STRENGTHS: Led by the Division I-bound Carlo Kemp (not committed), the Knights have a group of players in the defensive box that can get into their opponents’ backfield — time and time and time again. Fairview also just simply has one of the best coaches around in McCartney — a man who knows his players’ greatest strengths and utilizes them.

WEAKNESSES: Thomas Creese’s emergence as the starting quarterback is definitely not the weakness, but his lack of varsity experience is — with just 27 passing attempts in mop-up duty last year. At 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, he has the prototype QB frame — and he has a wide variety of targets to throw to.
