North Boulder still alive despite loss to Pearland, Texas in Waco

The dream is still alive for Woody Woolwine and his North Boulder little league team.

The “surprise team” according to the ESPN broadcasters dropped a 9-1 decision to Pearland, Texas on Tuesday night at Marvin Norcross Stadium in Waco, Texas in the first Southwestern Region semifinal of the Little League World Series.

Bidding to become the first Colorado team to ever qualify for the Little League Series in Willamsport, Pa., North Boulder will play in an elimination game on Wednesday night against Pine Bluff, Ark. on ESPN2 for the right to face Pearland again on Thursday night.

“We’ll have some pitching back when we take on Arkansas tomorrow and if we win that, we come right back against Texas,” said Woolwine, who was gracious enough to talk with his team still huddled around him in right field after the game. “We’ll then have our No. 1 and our No. 2 back ready to go.

“Our ace was burned for the championship anyway and without him tonight it was tough anyway.”

Despite all the pitching trouble, North Boulder was still only down 2-1 heading to the fifth inning of a six-inning game.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jackson Woolwine reached with an one-out single. The very next hitter was Nate Bach and he delivered a double to the right centerfield gap — his first hit of the tournament — that scored Woolwine and cut the Pearland lead in half.

But it was short-lived glee for North Boulder. In the top of the fifth, with one run already across, Pearland’s Marco Gutierrez blasted his second 2-run home run of the game and it just opened the floodgates for the Texas team from just outside of Houston.

Pearland would hit two more homers in the four-run sixth inning to bust the game wide open.

Woody Woolwine will now have the rally the troops and teach his kids to have a short memory.

“We just need to locate our offspeed stuff a little bit better. This team hits the fastball better than we can throw it by them,” Woody Woolwine said. “Our No. 1 and No. 2 guys have pretty good offspeed stuff.”

Coen Franz also had a base hit for North Boulder.
