BROOMFIELD — The Longmont/Erie baseball team walked away from Legacy High School on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the Boulder NIT with a sour taste in their mouth.
And that is a little hard to believe considering over the two games, they gave up just four runs and 10 hits and went 1-1.
After an exciting 3-2 win over Parker’s Lightning Baseball Club, the Trogers lost in walk-off fashion to the NoCo Roughnecks in eight innings, 2-1.
“We had eight hits and we could never get two in a row, we had three base-running mistakes, a bunt we didn’t get down, but both pitchers were good,” said coach Harold Simmons, whose team will be back at it today at Legacy against Batter’s Box 18U Gold at 10 a.m. “I just wasn’t real clean.”
Longmont/Erie had beaten the Roughnecks — a team made of graduated seniors from Loveland and Longmont — four times already this summer and had to feel good facing them one more time.
“But the thing today, they threw their No. 2 and in previous game we faced their No. 3 or 4,” Simmons said. “And that helped them today, but we just didn’t execute anything today.”
The base-running gaffes reared their ugly heads especially in the top of the sixth and seventh inning of a 1-1 game.
In the sixth, Kavan Andrew roped a lead-off double to the wall in left center field off of Jared Klug, but just three pitches later on Miguel Moroyoqui’s flyout to center, Andrew was nailed trying to move up by Dustin Starck.
In the next inning, Matt Sorenson was picked off of first base by catcher Ethan Howell.
“To see a game, where you can’t execute near the end of the season is a little frustrating,” Simmons said.
In the first game, the Trogers found themselves trailing 2-1 going to the sixth and needed a hero.
Enter Avery Peterson.
After a leadoff Moroyoqui single, Peterson was supposed to lay down a bunt and move the runner over. Instead, he swung away and deposited the first pitch he saw from Riley Egloff over the fence for a two-run home run.
“That at-bat should have never happened had I been a team player,” said a morose Peterson after the second game. “I missed a sign. I should have bunted it and moved the runner over to second. Everyone should have done their part to get the run in, it should have never been just me.”
It supported a brilliant effort on the mound from Nic Gavit, who pitched a complete game five hitter and struck out three.
