Paul Roberts, Lyons track and field: The conditions were right for the distance runners at the state meet in Lakewood this past weekend, and the entire Lyons contingent was spectacular to help the Lions win the 2A team title. Roberts, again, was elite. He was fourth-tenths off the 1A meet record in the 1,600 but took the win nonetheless for the third straight year, and he also re-gained the title in the 3,200 by outlasting Custer County’s Corey Lewenkamp in a dandy of a race. Roberts also helped the Lions win the 3,200 relay gold.
Mackenzie Fidelak, Niwot track and field: Niwot’s hurdlers were something to behold this year and a big part of why the Cougars girls won a third straight team title in 4A in 2015. Fidelak, a freshman, was not intimidated by the scene this past weekend, finishing second in both the 100 and 300 hurdles, third in the 400 meter dash, and she helped NHS to the 4A 800 relay meet record (1:41.13) with her anchor leg.
