The Centaurus girls soccer team forged ahead in the Class 4A girls soccer tournament by beating Valor Christian in penalty kicks Wednesday night. Up next is Ponderosa, and here’s a quick look at the matchup.

(26) Centaurus at (10) Ponderosa

When: Saturday, 5 p.m., Sports Authority Field-Parker

Records: Centaurus 9-6-1; Ponderosa 9-6-1.

Notes: Centaurus was the lowest seeded 4A team, and the Warriors managed to be the only one that advanced past the first round with an impressive victory over the Eagles of Valor Christian. The Warriors won 5-3 in penalty kicks after the teams played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer … Allison Ebersole had the fifth and final shootout goal, and Centaurus keeper Roxana Vranian made 15 saves to earn the shutout against a team that was ranked No. 1 in the class for a while during the season … Centaurus last made the second round of the playoffs in 2013, beating Windsor 4-0 on the road. That season also marked the Warriors’ first appearance in the state quarterfinals, a feat they can repeat Saturday with a victory … The last time Centaurus played Ponderosa was 2009, a 6-0 loss in regular season play. … Ponderosa has scored just seven goals in the past six games (3-2-1 record in that span) but the lone goal the Mustangs scored in the first round was enough to beat Holy Family. In that game, junior Breanna Collins made seven saves for the shutout and freshman Jensen Ellis scored the winner in double-overtime … For Ellis, that was her sixth goal of the year … The winner of this game will face either No. 2 seed The Classical Academy or No. 18 Standley Lake in the state quarterfinals next Thursday.
