Just two days after notching the first postseason victory in program history, the Dawson boys lacrosse team is headed to the Class 4A Final Four.

The fifth-seeded Mustangs advanced to the 4A semifinals Friday by going on the road and topping fourth-seeded Battle Mountain 12-10. Dawson (11-6) will face a rematch against top-seeded Aspen in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Dawson trailed 6-4 at halftime but took control by outscoring the host Huskies 4-1 in the third quarter.

“We came out of halftime with a lot of intensity,” Dawson coach Peter Devlin said. “I think in the second quarter we were a little flat. We moved the ball better in the third quarter and really started playing our game.

“This is exciting. I’m really proud of how the players have come together and they’re really playing well as a team. It’s the product of a lot of hard work.”

Freshman sensation Gavyn Pure led Dawson with three goals and two assists, but it was a balanced Dawson attack that also featured two goals and two assists from Chase Brown and two goals apiece from Zach Rinard and Jesse Rosenblatt. Goalie Chad Dunnell finished with 17 saves.

The Mustangs will make a return trip to Aspen, where they suffered an 18-12 loss against the Skiers. Dawson has won six of seven games since that setback.

“(Aspen) is a very athletic team,” Devlin said. “As a coaching staff we’ll go over that game and see what went wrong. We’re excited to go back.”
