Mastering the golf course at Heather Ridge in Aurora was not the goal for the Monarch girls golf team, but managing it certainly was on Monday.

With chilly-but-far-from-overwhelming conditions to play in, the Coyotes did what they needed to do in their Class 5A Northern Region tournament to get their entire team to the 5A state championships, placing second with a score of 257 aided by a fourth place finish from Delaney Elliott, who carded a 78.

Carly Gallant finished ninth overall at 88, and 12th and 14th-place finishes from Emma Touton (91) and Remy Mullen (96) earned the Coyotes a chance to score as a team at the Olde Course in Loveland in two weeks.

“It was a short course but they trick it up,” Monarch coach Mike Riley said. “The girls managed it very well, and we putted pretty good even though the greens were fast. The girls did a good job of working over a few holes to bounce back from a bad one.”

Broomfield played in the 5A Southern Region and finished fifth at Heritage Eagle Bend. Hope Kim finished in a tie for fifth place with an 87, while Maddie Kern (89) and Brenna Fankell (94) also made the state cut. Broomfield coach Tony Ferraro called it their best round as a team this year.

In 4A, Jennifer Kupcho of Jefferson Academy dominated Raccoon Creek, shooting a 1-under 71 to win the Metro West Region. She will be joined at state by Mariah Ehrman, who finished seventh with an 82. Peak to Peak participated in the regional, as well, but did not have anyone qualify for the state championships.

The Class 5A Western Region went well for Mark Glen’s crew from Legacy, as the Lightning rode a first place finish and season best round from Andrea Hoos (even par 72) to win at Fox Hollow. Jennifer Hankins also carded a 76 for fourth place, and the Lightning will be represented by a full foursome at state.
