BRIGHTON — It was going to take something pretty monumental on Thursday for the Legacy Lightning to give up their spot atop the Front Range League standings.
How confident was coach Mark Glen?
He had already booked practice round tee times for Saturday at Monday’s regional site, Fox Hollow Golf Club.
The Lightning, who were 20 shots clear of Fossil Ridge in the season-long standings, didn’t have one of their better days on Thursday at Riverdale Knolls in the final Front Range League match of the season, but it was good enough to win their second straight league title.
“With the end of this tournament it becomes more individual for high school players because this is all about team,” Lightning junior Jennifer Hankins said. “And even though you may not have done too well personally, you have to leave that aside for the team.”
Hankins, who played in the final group on Thursday alongside eventual medalist Maddy McCambridge of Fairview and runner-up Delaney Elliott of Monarch, started the day eight shots off the pace in the season long chase for medalist honors.
After a brutal start to her day that included a double bogey and triple bogey in her first five holes, Hankins knew she probably wasn’t going to be in that mix and seemed to settle down the rest of the way.
Hankins knows there are tweaks here and there in her game that will only help her on Monday and hopefully when state rolls around in a few weeks at the Olde Course at Loveland.
“There is a little fine tuning that I need,” she said. “But I feel like I can get back on track by Monday.”
Three different Lightning players — Hankins, Andrea Hoos and Laura From — all finished in the top nine of the FRL’s season standings and earned All-Conference honors in the process.
Broomfield maintained its sixth place spot in the standings and the group of Hope Kim, Maddy Kern, Brenna Fankell, Anna Roh and Cassidy Crown will head to Aurora’s Heritage Eagle Bend on Monday for the Southern Regional tournament.
