FORT COLLINS — Welcome back to the track, Alex Weseman.

As an 8-year old, Weseman was a regular on the running scene, but somewhere along the way he found his passion for soccer outweighed his love of track.

“I’ve been asked quite a bit to come back and race for Fairview for a couple of years,” said Weseman, a junior sprinter for Fairview. “I didn’t really have the time with soccer, but I decided this year to come back. I feel like it was a good decision.”

And boy, are the Knights and head coach Tricia Vieth thrilled about it.

On Saturday at French Field in the Runners Roost of Fort Collins, Weseman had the breakout meet of his resurrected career, qualifying early in the day for both the finals of the 100 and 200 meters against an impressive field of competitors.

“He’s not just a tremendous athlete and a great student, but he’s got a great personality and he really encourages others on the team,” said Vieth, who just met Weseman four weeks ago. “The first time a saw him run, it was just one of those ‘ah-ha’ moments.

“Just beautiful form, very determined and almost raw. He doesn’t know what to expect, so he just gives it his all.”

Weseman, who is not at all concerned about his times, finished eighth in the 100 with a time of 11.59 seconds. The winner was Regis Jesuit’s Javan Lanier in a crisp 10.91.

“Since I’m relatively new to it, I still don’t know what is good versus what is mediocre,” said Weseman, who also admitted he was a little burnt out of soccer. “But all of my teammates say they are pretty good times.”

After withdrawing from the 400 after he made the finals in the other two sprints, Weseman ran 23.60 in the 200 finals.

“It’s rare (to have that kind of success) in the events that he is doing. It is easy to do a 100 and 200,” Vieth said. “It’s just the second meet he has ever run in, so a lot of it is just natural ability, but what he accomplished today was phenomenal.”

Weseman is keeping his season-long goals modest and focusing on the little things that build a champion. If there is success along the way this year, then it will only help.

“I’m just working on my for and getting faster for next year since I’ll be a senior,” he said. “And then going to state and winning it. But for now the main goal has to be getting faster in general.”

The other star of the day for the Knights was Heather Betz, who won the high jump with a personal best 5-foot-4 inch jump.

“I feel like I was really close (to 5-5) and I just nicked it with my heel on the second attempt,” said Betz, who also finished sixth in the 100 hurdles. “I’m really pleased with where I am at this early in the season, it’s a good place to be and I’m hoping to build on it.”

Monarch pole vaulter Andrew Barlow once again had the crowd on his side as he kissed the sky with meet record-setting attempts. He ended up winning with a stunning 16-foot-3.5 inch jump.

Isaac Green was also victorious for the Coyotes and was the only runner to go sub-two minutes in the 800 meters, winning in 1:59.08.

Peak to Peak’s Tessa Anderson won the girls shot put with a throw of 37-9.5

Finally in the girls 1,600, Shining Mountain’s Ginger Hutton went out fast and then held off a the late kick of Denver North’s Kayla Young to win in 5:19.67. Young crossed in 5:20.78.

“My team during the last 100 meter stretch was letting me know that she was gaining on me,” Hutton said. “We had some great competition here today, so to get one here is awesome.”
