Track and field: Wetterstrom, Parish spark Longmont at Runners Roost

FORT COLLINS — Go ahead and question Sydney Wetterstrom’s track athletic ability. She will prove you wrong.

Fresh off a brilliant run with her Longmont Trojans girls basketball team to the Class 4A Final Four, Wetterstrom made her first appearance for the track team on Saturday since last May’s state meet and made it look easy.

“I was expecting it to be a little rusty, but with track, it’s a very rhythmic sport, so just getting that muscle memory back, it’s like riding a bike,” Wetterstrom said.

The Trojans junior won her first even of the year, jumping 35 feet, 10.5 inches on Saturday at French Field in the Runners Roost of Fort Collins to take the top spot in the girls triple jump.

“It was a matter of just breaking the rust and there are still a lot of rhythm and timing things that are a little haywire so to speak,” Longmont coach Kevin Akers said. “But to come out and jump within two inches of her PR in the high jump and a foot in the triple jump was huge.

“Gifted athletes like that just have an ability to pick up right where they left off almost and to some degree you let them be the athletes they are and try not to screw it up as a coach.”

Wetterstrom admitted that the transition wasn’t so hard from the hardwood to the track and that there are certain aspects that translate from sport to sport.

“You need to be quick and agile and constantly moving and being explosive like when somebody steals the ball,” said Wetterstrom, who finished second in the triple jump at state last season. “When I was high jumping, I was visualizing going up for a layup and reaching as high as you can.”

Wetterstrom, who finished 18th in the high jump last year, opened the season with an impressive leap of 5-2 that tied her with teammate Katherine McCain for second behind the jump of Fairview’s Heather Betz at 5-4.

It was another eye-opening performance in the discus from Keely Parish, who is already drawing comparisons to another area discus star in Valarie Allman. Her throw of 151 feet, 7 inches (a school record) was 14 feet further than last week and 26 feet further than her closest competition on Saturday.

“She is right on target for her season goals,” said Akers of his prized thrower, who currently has the fourth-best throw of the season among high school girls in the country. “She wants to win state obviously and she wants to break Valarie Allman’s state meet record of 164 and change. She continues to impress and again, great progression to start the season.”

It was an impressive team effort for the Trojans as well, who ended up second behind team champion Fort Collins (109 points) with 79 points.

“We had a good team track meet today and that is something we have been talking about since Day 1 essentially,” Akers said. “Picking each other up and supporting each other as teammates even when things go wrong and moving past it and on to the next event.”

The lone winner for the Longmont boys was Ethan Hitchcock, who won the 300 high hurdles in 41.71 seconds. Josh Walker was third in 42.39 seconds.

Also in the hurdles was Mead’s Tony Feula, who finished sixth in the 300, but made his mark in the 110.

After qualifying third in 15.86 earlier in the morning, Feula came back in the afternoon and went a personal-best 15.47 in the finals to finish second behind Thompson Valley’s Tanner Wall (15.34).

“I was aiming for first like always, but I’m really happy with how I did today,” said Feula, who finished 11th at state a season ago. “I just want to go and have fun at state and get good for next year.”

Mavericks coach Chris Reynolds points to an offseason of training and trips to a few national meets that have not only improved Feula’s physical ability, but his mental approach to the track.

“His goal is to be sub-15, and he is inching down and he is starting early in the season, which is good,” said Reynolds of his young hurdler who went to Houston to compete in the Junior Olympic Trials. “That was a big confidence boost for him and I think that gave him a vision of where he wanted to go, whereas before it was just something he did in addition to football.”

Silver Creek was also on hand and the Raptors girls 3,200 meter relay team of Mikayla Gaffney, Maiya Jazwierska, Brissa Ramirez and Taylor Stinson cruised to an eight-second victory over Mead, finishing in 10:28.33.
