BROOMFIELD — Just when you think you have everything in place the way its supposed to be entering the season, that darn injury bug flies in.

First-year Jefferson Academy girls basketball coach Crystal Deichert’s team was bitten badly in the first quarter of their opening round game of their Black and Gold Classic against Grand Valley, when sophomore Kristi Nagai left with what appeared to be a fractured wrist.

“That was a big blow,” Deichert said. “She is critical to what we do on both ends of the floor.”

The Jaguars were never out of the game, but never really got into any sort of sustained flow against the Cardinals and eventually lost 39-33.

Jefferson Academy will play in the consolation game against Dawson School — a loser to Sheridan in the opening game of the tournament — on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

Nagai’s replacement, freshman Rachel Schlagel, filled in admirably and played steady in Deichert’s system.

The Jags were within a point in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t match the Cardinals’ size inside. Jordan Scott (nine points), Guilia Hall (four) and Kylyn Rigsby (nine) helped Grand Valley pull away down the stretch.

Heidi Wendt led all scorers, finishing with 10 points in the losing effort for Jefferson Academy. Emma Anderson chipped in with eight.
