Both Skyline and Silver Creek had chances to make a big splash in the first round of the Class 4A state soccer tournament on Wednesday, but the higher seeds ended up escaping and advancing while the Falcons and Raptors packed for home with season-ending losses in tow.

Skyline, seeded 18th in the 32-team bracket, took No. 15 Pueblo West to a shootout before falling to the Cyclones 4-1 on the penalty kicks. The Falcons trailed 2-0 early in the second half in Pueblo, but goals by Cruz Valdez and Alec Bennett in the final 7 minutes of play pushed the game into overtime.

After two overtimes, the game was decided on a shootout, and Skyline couldn’t avoid the posts while watching Pueblo West convert four of five attempts.

The Falcons finished 13-3 on the season.

Meanwhile, up the road a bit in Colorado Springs, Silver Creek had an even tougher go against No. 3 Cheyenne Mountain as the No. 30 seed. The Raptors didn’t let the Indians run roughshod, but three first-half goals from three different players sent Cheyenne Mountain to the next round with a 3-0 victory.

The Raptors finished the season 6-8-2 for first year coach Vytas Rauba.
