Lyons standout Paul Roberts captures the Class 2A Region 1 title on Thursday.

LYONS — The weather conditions weren’t ideal for Lyons High School’s Paul Roberts to go for a personal best and course record time at home on Thursday. His coach and father Mark Roberts told him so before the 2A Region 1 meet.

Paul Roberts wasn’t pleased with his father’s prediction and went for the personal best anyway. It turns out the elder Roberts is wiser.

While he didn’t reach his ambitious goal, Paul Roberts still won the regional title handily. He took first in 15 minutes, 33 seconds.

“I didn’t get the PR today but I’m still happy with it,” Paul Roberts, who set a PR of 15:15 at the St. Vrain Invitational earlier this season, said. “My dad told me that’s about what I’d run and he was right. I need to remember that my coaches know more about me than me sometimes. It’s all about state next week for me and the team.”

If it’s all about state, both the Lions boys and girls teams appear to be ready. Each won a team title on Thursday with 16 points.

Behind Paul Roberts, Lions senior Matt Dillon placed second with a time of 17:16. Junior Joel Such placed 13th in 18:45.

“It was a good day for me and I got a PR,” Dillon said. “It was a really good day for us because it cooled down a little bit so it wasn’t too hot when it was our turn to run. I’m going for the top 10 at state and our team would like to continue our streak of wins. It’s also really exciting that our girls team has a chance to win too.”

The Lions have won the past two 2A boys team titles, sweeping the top three spots for a perfect score in 2013.

On the girls side on Thursday, Ceann Udovich led the Lions in fourth place with a time of 19:52. Teammate Sierra Tucker placed fifth in 20:22 and Jenna Anderson placed seventh in 20:39.

Shining Mountain’s Ginger Hutton won the individual 2A girls title with a time of 19:33. Her teammate Paisley Sheehan took sixth in 20:37.

Margaret Berry was the top finisher from Dawson School, taking ninth in 21:08. Nederland’s Sophia Lindenberger led her team in 11th place with a time of 21:20

In the 3A Region 3 meet, the Peak to Peak Pumas took second place in the girls division. The Pumas tied Kent Denver with 59 team points, but since Kent Denver’s lowest scoring runner placed higher than the Pumas’, Kent Denver was awarded first place.

Alice Oveson led the Pumas in third place with a time of 20:35, Dallas Frisbie placed fourth in 20;41 and Christina Hamerly placed eighth in 21:06.

“I wasn’t feeling great today but my coach told me to go out there and have fun, so that’s what I did,” Overson said. “We were pretty tightly grouped and we’re all at a similar fitness level. We’re so excited for state and the Black Cloud, that’s us, is coming.”

The Pumas also placed second in the 3A boys race.

Isaac Ruble led the Pumas boys in fourth place with a time of 17:35. Calvin Riss took seventh in 17:42. Alexander Mowery placed eighth in 17:43.

The top 15 finishers in each division qualified for the state meet next Saturday at Norris-Penrose Event Center.
