Ignatius Castelino, Fairview tennis: After finishing runner-up in three straight singles state title matches, the Knights senior finally broke through for a state championship in his final opportunity. In a gritty, come-from-behind effort, Castelino defeated Cherry Creek’s Ethan Hillis 1-6, 7-6 (1), 7-5 in the No. 1 singles final at the Class 5A state tournament to leave Fairview as the state champion.




Rio Sanchez, Erie softball: With a few timely hits backing her up, the Tigers’ ace led her team to two wins at the Class 4A Region 2 tournament the sixth seed in the upcoming 4A state tournament. In two close wins against Air Academy and Mountain View, Sanchez allowed just three earned runs and struck out 16 batters. Sanchez now had a 9-6 record and a 1.30 ERA on the season.
