Entering Saturday’s football game against the University of Massachussetts, former Fairview High standout and current Miami (Ohio) University freshman wide receiver Sam Martin had made just three catches.
Walking off the field following the 42-41 comeback win, Martin had added eight catches, 111 yards and four touchdowns, that’s right four touchdowns, to his season stat line.
On Monday, Martin was named College Football Performer of the Week by College Football Performance Awards, which selects players each week who statistically increased their team’s chances of victory the most.
Martin left high school football in Colorado as the state’s all-time leader in catches and yards in a single season. As of Saturday, Martin is back on the record-setting path. His four touchdowns on Saturday matched Miami (Ohio) University’s record for receiving touchdowns in a single game.
Martin’s four scores tied Andy Schilling’s four against Central Michigan on Nov. 1, 1986. Martin now has 144 receiving yards on 11 catches through his first six games.
Martin was named BoCoPreps.com football Player of the Year his senior season at Fairview High School after making 112 receptions for 1,860 yards.
