The boys tennis teams from Fairview and Boulder will continue their heated local rivalry at the next level.
In this case, that next level is the Class 5A state tournament. When the championships begin next week in Denver both Fairview and Boulder will have their entire clubs in the field after sweeping through their respective regional finals on Wednesday.
Both squads claimed team titles while advancing their entire squads to the Gates Tennis Center next week.
Boulder won regional titles at six of seven positions and secured having its full squad at state when the No. 1 doubles team of Arie Van Vuuren and Nathan Lazarus earned a straight-set win against Chris Collins and Ethan Lanz of Columbine in a state-qualifying playback match.
“We got all seven lines through last year, but I think the biggest difference is that was pretty much all as No. 2 seeds,” Boulder coach Adrian Games said. “This year we pretty much have all No. 1’s, so at state we’ll have better seeds. It’s all about matchups at state when you get there. That effort was good to see.”
Fairview kept its hopes alive of challenging perennial power Cherry Creek for the 5A team title by advancing all seven positions as well. The Knights recorded a clean sweep of the championship matches, leaving head coach Chad Tsuda optimistic about his club’s chances next week.
“I think our strength of schedule is really something that is going to help us out,” Tsuda said. “Playing the Kent Denvers, the Niwots … we played at the Cherry Creek invite, and I think all that gives us valuable experience for the very best of the competition we’re going to see at state.”
