Rooney: Silver Creek softball aims for win weeks in the making

The Niwot softball team received the honor of being the first squad to hand a defeat to Mountain View, the Northern League front-runner that is ranked No. 2 in 4A in the latest CHSAANow.com poll.

It was a more than commendable achievement for the Cougars, yet it should be noted that Silver Creek had the Mountain Lions on the ropes a few weeks ago. On Saturday, the Raptors finally will have an opportunity to close the deal.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, Silver Creek welcomes the Mountain Lions back to its field to resume a game suspended by rain on Sept. 11. The Raptors played small-ball to perfection through the first two innings of the contest, jumping to a 7-0 lead before Mountain View got on the board with a run in the top of the third.

When play resumes Saturday morning, Mountain View will have one runner on base and one out in the top of the third, with Silver Creek holding a 7-1 lead.

Silver Creek athletic director Marty Tonjes said breakfast will be cooked for students in hopes of packing the stands. Bring an appetite, as a win by Silver Creek will put the Raptors in the driver’s seat for the Northern League crown.

Thanks to Niwot’s win Tuesday against Mountain View, finishing their own win against the Mountain Lions would give Silver Creek sole possession of first place with three games remaining at home against Boulder, at Thompson Valley, and at Centaurus.

Mountain View completes its league slate against Boulder and Thompson Valley.
