Despite a painful back condition that will require surgery, junior Sarah Holbrook hopes to lead Broomfield to its second state title in three seasons

Sarah Holbrook, Jr., Broomfield: Will compete this season in a lot of pain. Still, her 75-80 percent is good enough to make a serious charge at state.

Kailey Licata, Sr., Broomfield: A very focused athlete that will be a big part of the Eagles’ run at a second title in three years.

Maddie Barkow, So., Niwot: Returning to the Cougars following a freshman year that ended with a seventh-place vault, this sophomore expects to be a big player at state again.

Rachel Dillmann, Jr., Legacy/Mountain Range: A newcomer to a very deep Mustangs squad that coach Diane Clark thinks will give her team a chance to win it all.

Regional meets to be completed by Oct. 25

State meet: Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at Thornton High School

Coach: Erika Taga (5th year).

Last year: Class 5A state runner-up.

Returning state qualifiers: Heather Betz (Jr.); Alana Hill (Sr.); Sarah Holbrook (Jr.; 2nd in all-around, 2nd on beam, 8th on floor, 8th on bars, 4th on vault); Kailey Licata (Sr.; 8th in all-around, 8th on beam, 4th on bars); Jessica Riley (Sr.); Izzy Roser (Sr.); Molly Snipes (Sr.); Nicki Verheyen (So.).

Others to watch: Heidi Liles (Fr.); Amanda McKee (Sr.); Nicole Remund (Fr.).

Outlook: The Eagles figure to be right back in the mix of the Class 5A race with the likes of defending state champion Overland and Legacy/Mountain Range. Coach Taga’s team, champions in 2012, missed a chance at defending their title by just .45 of a point last year. A painful pill to swallow, but at the same time a motivating factor for the 2014 season. “Last year ended up being a blessing because I think they were still riding the high of 2012 and they lost a little bit of that focus of the want and desire of it,” Taga said. “To have the result that we did definitely re-ignited that fire.”

Coach: Diane Clark (2nd year).

Last year: Third at 5A state finals.

Returning state qualifiers: Carrie Bosveld (Sr.; 15th on beam); Abby Crosier (So.); Nora Forrestal (Sr.); Brandi Fox (Jr.; 15th on floor); Mali Glaister (Sr.); Kate Hernandez (Jr.); Syd Kotar (Sr.); Caitlyn Paplow (Sr.); Natalie Prestwich (So.).

Others to watch: Rachel Dillmann (Jr.); Marina Larson (Sr.).

Outlook: “I think we will be right in the mix. We don’t have that Taylor Molliconi-type person, but we certainly have a lot more depth,” Clark said. She also mentioned how much room for improvement there is with this group, which means by the time state rolls around they may very well hit their peak.

Coach: Mallorie Lang (7th year).

Last season: 11th at 5A state finals.

Returning state qualifiers: Maddie Barkow (So.; 7th in vault; 11th on beam); Ellie Beeck (So.); Alexis Carroll(So.); Gabby Casey, (Sr.); Jordan Sleeth (Sr.).

Other to watch: Marissa Koski (So.); Lilli Martin (Fr.); Hannah McDonald (Fr.); Amelia Sear (So.).

Outlook: With a handful of Cougars overcoming injuries from last year or the preseason, head coach Mallorie Lang thinks the team has high expectations and will be more competitive in its first season at the 4A level. “We will be approaching this season like we do every one and that is to have fun, work hard, and make memories,” Lang said.
