After surrendering seven home runs in a catastrophic 22-2 loss to the Arvada Colts to begin the afternoon, the Boulder Collegians and their fan base must have had a sense of déjà vu all over again as they gave up two more long balls in the first two innings of the day’s second affair against the Colorado Sox.

But the Collegians refused to fold, as Drew Rosbottom led off the bottom of the second with a solo shot of his own to cut the lead to one. Boulder tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning to take the lead and Cole Maltese delivered an RBI double in fifth to break a tie and give his team a 6-5 victory, staving off elimination and advancing to the finals of the Rocky Mountain Baseball League Regional Tournament.

Taking on the league-champion and No. 1-seeded Colts in Game 1, the sixth-seeded Collegians were hammered early and often, trailing 5-0 before they even stepped to the plate and exiting the field as the mercy rule was invoked following five innings of play.

The team was then forced to turn around and play immediately after against the second-seeded Sox, a team they had defeated 4-2 less than 24 hours earlier. Boulder seemed to be in trouble again after starter Tyler Patty gave up a homer to lead-off man Zac Baldini to open the game. Drew Umbro also sent one out of the park an inning later to make it 2-0.

But Patty eventually settled down though, finding his groove while spreading seven hits and two walks out over the course of seven innings while striking out five. His complete-game marks the third a Collegians’ starter has tossed in their four contests at the tournament.

In addition to the Rosbottom home run, Patty received some help from his teammates after they loaded up the bases to start the bottom of the fourth. Michael Graff then singled in a run to score Spencer Ibarra. Rosbottom later came home on a sacrifice fly, and AJ Kruzel smacked a two-out double that scored two to make it 5-3 Boulder.

Though the Sox answered back with yet another homer and an additional run to tie things up in the top of the fifth, the Collegians took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame. Ibarra and Rosbottom led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and Maltese followed with a double to score the go-ahead run.

Though Boulder couldn’t add any additional runs despite loading the bases with no outs, it proved to be enough for Patty, who allowed just one single over the course of the final two innings to seal the deal.

The win sets up a rematch with the Colts for the tourney championship on Sunday. That game will be played at noon, and should Boulder win they will have to beat Arvada in a second game at 3 p.m., as the Colts have advanced through the double-elimination tournament undefeated.
