Thanks to Wednesday’s rainstorm forcing Fairview’s Old School Dirtbags to bring their first game of the Connie Mack state tournament to a halt, the team was forced to finish that contest and then play another Thursday in order to get back on schedule. As if having a quasi-doubleheader to kick off the championships wasn’t enough, the Dirtbags then decided to go extra innings in the day’s first game.
Though the team ended up losing that initial contest 2-1 to a Slammers (Zavaras) squad in nine innings, they still had hope of advancing to Friday in the double-elimination tournament. And despite the prolonged day on the diamond, the team came on strongest toward its end, scoring six runs in its last three innings to take a 6-5 win over Castle View and advance to the third round of action.
After allowing tournament host Castle View a big first inning, the Dirtbags found themselves down 5-0 as they stepped to the dish in the bottom of the fourth of Game 2. That’s when the Fairview squad finally was able to do some harm, plating one run. That bit of momentum carried into the following frame, as the Dirtbags tagged the hurler for four more runs to tie things up.
“I think we just strung it together finally,” Dirtbags head coach Rick Harig said. “It was a pitchers’ duel for a while, but we finally strung stuff together and came through with runners on base.”
As the OSDs finally started finding their groove at the plate, they were simultaneously able to shut down Castle View’s hitters. Cam Frazier came on in relief of starter Jake Kearney to start the fifth and was dominant, allowing three hits in three scoreless innings of work and striking out two. He was ultimately awarded the win when the Dirtbags went up for good with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
“They didnt get much off (Frazier) at all and he did a great job,” Harig said.
Michael Garza had a solid game at the plate, going 1 for 2 with two RBIs, and Ken Saenz went 2 for 3 while adding a RBI and a run scored. Ryan Madden led the way in the first game, going 3 for 5 with a run.
The Dirtbags will play again Friday at 9 a.m. to kick off the third round.
