A large contingent of Niwot football parents didn’t want to see their favorite program look upon its pending move to Class 3A from 4A as a step backward in the third season of the Josh Brewer era.
Furthermore, the passionate sports community at Niwot has been eager to generate excitement for a football program that has endured difficult times in recent seasons.
That spirit has led to the formation of the Niwot Touchdown Club. Comprised largely of team parents, the club already has put together a successful fundraising project while plotting ways to make the game-night experience a more memorable one for Cougars fans.
“It really started to come about last fall when it became definite that Niwot was going to move from 4A to 3A in football,” said team parent Doug Montgomery, one of several organizers of the Niwot Touchdown Club. “The program has been down for a little while but we want to make it exciting again. It’s not going to be like a traditional booster club. It’s more about building the community and getting some spirit going between the students and the parents.”
The objectives of the new club will be multi-faceted. In addition to fundraising efforts, the Touchdown Club is plotting a number of game-night festivities while attempting to reconnect with alumni of the football program. Given that Montgomery and his wife both are former collegiate sports information directors, a comprehensive overhaul of the team website is in the works.
On Friday, the Touchdown Club hosted the Cougar Classic Golf Tournament at Saddleback Golf Course. The group landed not only a title sponsor, but sold sponsorships for all 18 holes.
“When I was hired I made a point of trying to generate more excitement within our community. They’re doing a great job of helping with that,” Brewer said. “It was formed largely to help enhance our game-day experience for the kids. If there are any needs for the program, they help us out.”
More information about the club, including possible sponsorship opportunities, is available by emailing Montgomery at email@example.com.
