Silver Creek’s Jamie Kirkland already has been blessed with the opportunity to pursue a dream of hers, having been given an appointment to the Air Force Academy where she reported Thursday.
She might be able to carry on another of her passions after all, too. On Thursday, Kirkland told me that she’d be looking to walk on to the soccer team in the fall.
An avid pilot, Kirkland had her sights set on landing in the Springs for a long, long time, even if that meant not being able to play goalie collegiately. Initially, that’s what she thought was going to happen.
Things have changed a bit, however.
“I have been talking to the coach through email,” Kirkland said. “I tried to talk to him during my junior year, and he seemed to already have a goalkeeper lined up so he wasn’t really interested.
“But he started to contact me again, so I don’t know what happened. I’m sending him a video soon to show him again how I play. Hopefully I get to walk on.”
Kirkland had a great senior season, posting nine shutouts with 76 saves for the Raptors. She was a unanimous all-Northern League selection and was an honorable mention for the BoCoPreps.com all-region team.
