The Class 4A girls golf state title is Jennifer Kupcho’s to lose.

Taking advantage of the high scores marking the first day of play in the Class 4A state golf finals, the Jefferson Academy junior separated herself from the pack by firing an even-par 72 during the opening round of play Monday at the Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs.

Kupcho will take a nine-shot lead into Tuesday’s finale over Jaguars teammate Mariah Ehrman and Valor Christian’s Andrea Ballou.

It was a rough opening day for the four-player contingent from Broomfield. Hope Kim turned in the top performance for the Eagles, finishing the day in a tie for 22nd with an 18-over par 90. Carson Platnick added a 91 as the Eagles finished the day in sixth-place in the team standings, five strokes behind fifth-place Colorado Academy.
