Silver Creek’s Brock Ricks fires a pitch during the Raptors’ 8-6 loss against Rangeview Tuesday at Coors Field

DENVER — While handfuls of high school baseball teams have played at Coors Field throughout the past several years, Silver Creek never had that opportunity until Tuesday.

Naturally, the Raptors were playing to win, but an 8-6 loss to Rangeview didn’t tarnish the experience on the Colorado Rockies’ home diamond.

“I’ve always dreamed about playing on Coors,” Silver Creek shortstop Scott Platt said. “It really hit me when I walked in the tunnel, thinking about that it’s where Cal Ripken Jr., Derek Jeter and all my favorite players have walked through. Then playing shortstop where Tulo does, it’s a great thing.”

The Raptors (1-3), who will depart Wednesday for the Arizona-based Coach Bob National Invitational, took a 6-3 lead into the fifth. But Class 5A Rangeview took command with a five-run burst, an inning highlighted by catcher Jeffrey Cordova’s bases-clearing double off the left field wall.

That put the Raiders (2-6) ahead 7-6 and chased Silver Creek starter Brock Ricks, who persevered into the fifth before Kyle Barth relieved him. For the Raptors, the emphasis was more rooted in getting everyone in the game than attempting to pull off a comeback.

“I thought it was good overall,” Raptors coach Trevor Platt said. “We put (runs) up early, and we just had two innings in which we gave up the runs. They had that big inning where they put five up, and we just have to get over that. We just can’t have that big inning.”

Scott Platt went 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot and second-place hitter Sebastian Metcalf went 1-for-2 with an RBI triple, two walks and two stolen bases.

“I thought it was a lot of fun, just seeing all the guys’ faces,” Metcalf said. “We were all really excited to be out here and playing on a field like that. Even though we came out with a loss, I think it was a good experience.”

Center fielder Zach Brown put the Raptors up 1-0 with an RBI single in the first and added a sacrifice fly in the fourth that gave Silver Creek its biggest lead at 6-3. But the Raptors couldn’t recover from Rangeview’s gigantic fifth.

Still, after a 1-18 campaign last season, the Raptors are beginning to build back to the year-in, year-out playoff squad that more defines their reputation.

“We’re definitely a lot better mentally than last year,” Metcalf said. “We just need to get that second win, and I think our confidence will just skyrocket from there.”

Additional Raptors highlights included a double down the line by catcher Matt Siedem, an RBI single by Elijah Larimore and a dominant seventh on the mound by Brown. He struck out two of the three batters he faced in his lone inning of work.

Coach Platt knows reestablishing contender status isn’t a magic-quick proposition, but he aims to have his Raptors competing mightily when 4A Northern League play begins.

“We’ll get it back and get going,” he said. “The second half is the big half anyway with that Northern. We’re all right and we’re excited.”
