Alex Beal, Shining Mountain basketball: Beal has helped the Lions turn things up a notch, scoring at least 24 points in five of the team’s last seven games. Last week, Shining Mountain swept Denver Jewish Day School as well as Pawnee, and Beal shot 60 percent from the floor on his way to 25- and 29-point efforts. Beal secured 13 rebounds and also had five blocked shots. Thanks to the recent scoring run, Beal is now second in 1A at 20.5 points per outing.

Elizabeth Peterson, Broomfield swimming: Setting a league record is always a nice feather in the cap, and Peterson was able to save her best race for the tail end of the Northern League championship swim meet last Saturday. Peterson swam the 100 backstroke in a torrid 58.20 seconds, winning the event by more than 1 1/2 seconds. She also cruised to a victory in the 100 butterfly with a time (57.71) that was more than 4 seconds faster than anyone else. At this weekend’s Class 4A state meet, Peeterson will be seeded third in the butterfly and second in the back.
