A couple of the top regular season tournaments in wrestling and girls swimming highlight what is shaping up to be an exciting weekend in prep sports.
In wrestling, Lyons High School will host the annual Lyons Invitational on Saturday. One of the area’s top competitions, the host Lions will welcome the squads from Skyline, Erie, Silver Creek and Niwot, in addition to competition from across the Denver Metro region. Finals are slated to begin at approximately 5 p.m.
In girls swimming, Centennial Pool in Longmont will be the locale for the annual All-City meet between Niwot, Silver Creek, Longmont and Skyline. Niwot has never failed to finish first at the meet. The diving preliminaries begin at 11 a.m. with the finals in all events set for 1 p.m.
And finally in basketball, it will be a huge rivalry weekend for programs across the BoCoPreps.com coverage area. It will be a hectic rivalry weekend for the boys and girls squads from Fairview, as the Knights battle Monarch on Friday night before squaring off against the boys and girls squads from Boulder in a cross-town rivalry showdown at the Coors Events Center on Saturday night.
In the St. Vrain region the 9-1 Longmont Trojans boys team faces a stern test at Erie on Saturday afternoon, while Saturday night’s slate features another intriguing boys basketball matchup between Frederick and Niwot, both of which are coming off big Tuesday nights wins–Frederick at Erie, and Niwot against Silver Creek.
ALUMNI CORNER
Fairview graduate Mike Melillo of the Colorado Mesa men’s basketball team received first team honors among the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic selections. Melillo carries a 3.77 GPA in Business Administration. Silver Creek graduate Charlie Hagan (Colorado Mines) and Broomfield alums Katie Nehf (CSU-Pueblo) and Meagan Prins (Fort Leiws) all were honorable mention selections … Centaurus alum Kirk Harvey was named the RMAC’s Track Athlete of the Week for Metro State after opening the indoor season by winning the 3,000-meter race at the Air Force Holiday Open.
