Girls swimming: Driscoll sets tone for Cougars’ successful day

Niwot’s Hannah Driscoll checks out the scoreboard after her second-place race in the 100 freestyle at the Colorado Coaches Invitational.

THORNTON — Yes, it’s the pre-break portion of the swimming schedule, not the time when state titles are won and lost.

That being said, the Coaches Invite is perhaps the premier December event on the high school docket prior to the turn of the calendar. That means Niwot senior Hannah Driscoll’s standout performance was nothing to scoff at.

Driscoll set two school records Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center, registering a time of 1 minute, 4.25 seconds in the breaststroke — an event she won outright — and a 51.87 in the 100 freestyle, in which she finished second. She also swam the opening leg of the Cougars’ standout 200 free relay team, which finished second to 5A power Fairview.

“It’s definitely a confidence booster and it’s nice to race such great competition early on in the season,” Driscoll said. “I’m just grateful that we got to come out and have a good time while we raced today.”

Niwot absolutely had a splendid time, considering its second-place finish among 4A squads (11th overall) and abundance of state-qualifying times. In addition to Driscoll, state cuts included Kylie Pillard and Elise Cranny in each the 50 and 100 free style, Sonia Martinez in the 100 and 200 free, Cate Rose in the 500 free and Lauren FitzGibbons in the breaststroke.

“They certainly came out and exceeded our expectations for them,” Niwot coach Sarah Heller said. “They’ve been coming off some hard training and a lot of them qualified for state today. We had some girls who didn’t qualify until late last year who qualified today, we had some personal bests, so it was all around a good day.”

The Niwot 200 free relay team took second place at state last season, but lost Zoie Jordan to graduation. In their first time participating the event this season, the Cougars plugged in freshman Chase Balman. She swam second, after Driscoll, and Cranny and Pillard followed as the Cougars rocketed to a 1:04.29 finish. The time trailed only Fairview’s 1:39.45.

Driscoll’s individual performance, though, was the headliner.

“Absolutely,” Heller said. “She wanted to win one individual today and it’s great she was able to accomplish that goal.”

Driscoll won the breaststroke a mere two events after competing in the 200 free relay, a prospect she said “was a quick turnaround but I thought it was a really good warm up.”

Silver Creek and Skyline also represented the St. Vrain area at the meet, with Silver Creek placing third among 4A squads and 19th overall among 37 schools. Raptors senior Kylie Rembert advanced to the finals in each the 200 and 100 free.

Rembert placed eighth in each, which she was satisfied with at this point in the season.

“Overall I was really happy,” Rembert said. “It was hard to come back in such a short time after the prelims, and those were the fifth and sixth sprints of the day. I was happy getting close to my best times, even though I would have liked to go a little bit faster.”

Rembert is part of a triplet tandem that includes sister, Emilie, and brother, Niko, each basketball players.

“When I was super little I played rec basketball with them,” she said. “I got into swimming on a bring-your-friend-to-practice day, and I don’t think I ever left after that.”

In addition for the Raptors, sophomore Jenna Latsko placed sixth in the breaststroke.

Skyline earned its lone team point by virtue of junior Mackenzie Dwyer’s 16th-place finish in the 200 individual medley.
