THORNTON — Like nearly all swimmers this time of year, Broomfield’s Elizabeth Peterson hasn’t quite reached peak form yet.

That’s why her performance Saturday in the Coaches Invite was a pleasant surprise not only to her coach, Emily Austin, but to Peterson herself. In a meet largely composed of Class 5A squads, Peterson placed sixth in the 100 butterfly and seventh in the 100 backstroke at Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center.

“It was a really good meet,” Peterson said. “They were both close to my personal bests, which is really good for this part of the season. And I was moving up places, which is always good for the team.”

The Eagles finished second in the 4A standings with 53 points and 14th overall in the 37-team meet, with Peterson’s performance a chief reason why.

“I think Elizabeth today is what stood out to me,” Austin said. “She did really well this morning (in the preliminaries) and she did phenomenally well this evening. Her times were great, too, not just her placing.”

Peterson finished the butterfly in 58.65 and the backstroke in 1:00.49. She also swam in the 200 and 400 free relays, and her strong performance in the 400 helped vault Broomfield to a 10th-place finish.

In addition for the Eagles, sophomore Kate Peterson finished sixth in the 500 freestyle (5:10.49) and senior Kendall Wingfield placed 16th in the 50 freestyle (25.86).

“We only brought six girls and we wanted to make the most of the swims that we had,” Austin said. “Everyone swam phenomenally well. We had best times in all of our relays, our relay splits, our individuals. We had two not-awesome swims out of all of them, but they came back and did well in other events.”

Elizabeth Peterson was the top 4A finisher in each of her individual events. In the 100 fly, Peterson was 2.54 seconds off the pace set by Missouri-bound Erin Metzger-Seymour of Ralston Valley.

In the backstroke, she was 4.27 seconds behind runaway winner Shelly Drozda, a junior from Mountain Range.

“I feel like by the end of the season, me and my whole team will be able to do a lot better,” Peterson said. “It was really cool to get to race (the 5A girls) because I know a lot of them through club swimming. It’s good to get to race against them in a different setting.”

Legacy also competed in the meet, with the Lightning gaining their two team points on a 15th-place finish by junior Mary Lombardi in the 500 free.
