Girls swimming: Beetcher leads Fairview to third straight title at Coaches Invitational

Fairview’s Sandra Freeman churns toward the finish line during the Knights’ first-place effort at the annual Colorado Coaches Invitational.

THORNTON — During the preseason, as the Fairview girls swim prepared for what was expected to be another exemplary campaign, Knights coach Bob Smartt was a little reticent to talk about freshman Brittney Beetcher.

It’s not that Smartt wasn’t prepared to gush about the newcomer’s robust talents. It’s just that Smartt wanted his returning standouts got a little taste of the limelight before the inevitable accolades flew Beetcher’s way.

Well, the secret officially is out. Beetcher is pretty darn good.

Fairview’s standout freshman won both distance freestyle events and helped lead the Knights to a title in the 200 freestyle relay, leading an effort that ended with Fairview’s third consecutive title at the annual Colorado Coaches Invitational.

Fairview outscored runner-up Cherry Creek 271-238.

“I’m super-excited about my times,” Beetcher said. “When I came here I didn’t really have any expectations. I just came back from another big meet, and I just wanted to do my best for my team.”

Beetcher may have entered the top regular season meet on the swimming slate with a ho-hum attitude, yet once there she turned in one of the more memorable performances in the rich history of the Fairview program.

In Beetcher’s victorious swim in the 500 freestyle, the freshman posted a time of 4 minutes, 54.98 seconds. That time was the second-best mark in program history, trailing only the 4:54.70 posted by Sarah Fischer in 2004.

Beetcher also posted a win in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in 1:51.45. Less than 10 minutes after her win in the 500 freestyle, Beetcher was back in the pool to anchor the Knights’ victory in the 200 freestyle relay, joining with Sienna Stonesmith, Jessie Li, and Logan Tidstrom to post a winning time of 1:39.45.

Fairview also finished second in the 400 freestyle relay and third in the meet-opening medley relay. Beyond the individual swims, Smartt lauded the effort of Beetcher and the rest of the Knights’ relay team as the springboard to the club’s third consecutive title at the Coaches Invitational.

“The real key was how the kids responded in the relays,” Smartt said. “In the medley relay in the (preliminaries) we were seventh and we moved up to third. That’s eight points right there. The 200 free relay, we went from second to first. That’s six points. And then the 400 free relay, we qualified fourth and moved up to second. It was great to see the kids come together and take responsibility on those relays.”

Beetcher, however, was hardly the only local youngster making a statement about the next wave of area superstars.

Monarch freshman Sidney Trimm made a nearly equally impressive debut at the Coaches Invitational, placing second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle. Trimm also helped the Coyotes place 14th in the 200 freestyle relay.

Sophomore Josie Valette was the standout for a shorthanded Boulder team that competed without state title contenders Amanda Richey and Haley Rowley. Valette did her best to fill the void, placing third in the backstroke and eighth in the 50 freestyle.

“I was just hoping to represent my team and show them that I could be the best I could for them,” Trimm said. “It was fun. I thought if I tried my hardest I could get to where I wanted to be. And I got to where I wanted to be.”
