Longmont running back Drake Greeott tries to elude a Pueblo South defender during the Trojans’ loss in the first round of the 4A state tournament.

PUEBLO — The Longmont football team made the three hour trip to Pueblo with visions of upsetting the No. 5 seed in Class 4A Friday, and nearly did just that, taking a double digit lead into the fourth quarter.

But host Pueblo South rallied late, scoring three consecutive touchdowns to end the game and knock the Trojans out of the state tournament with a 38-27 first round win.

The Trojans found their groove in the second quarter when junior quarterback Clint Sigg connected with senior Spencer Zuege for a 35-yard score to put LHS on the board. Running back Eli Sullivan gave Longmont a 12-10 lead just minutes later when he crossed the goal line for a 3-yard score.

After trailing 17-12 at half the Trojans regained the lead with 2 minutes to go in the third quarter when Sigg and Sullivan teamed up for a 70-yard touchdown. Sigg would finish with 207 yards through the air, while adding 82 on the ground. Senior Drake Greeott then took a 24-yard run to the house with under a minute to play in the third, giving the visitors a 27-17 going into the final quarter.

But the Trojans offense ran out of gas in the final 12 minutes and the Colts took advantage, storming all the way back for the win. Pueblo South took the lead at 31-27 with about 4 minutes to go on 24-yard run by quarterback Nathan Spinuzzi and tacked on another score minutes later with a 52-yard rushing score from Garrett Krage.

“We were moving the ball on them and we just got a few penalties that killed a couple drives,” Longmont head coach Doug Johnson said of the fourth quarter. “And (at one point) we had them at fourth and six and their quarterback just made a great pass up field… The momentum just totally shifted.”

The loss means the 12-seeded Trojans finish the year with a record of 7-3.
