BROOMFIELD — With shots at the state tournament on the line, both the Fairview and Monarch golf squads stepped to the links at the Broadlands Thursday attempting to best one another.
As it turns out, neither was able to.
The two teams both shot a total of 230, tying for third as teams at the Class 5A Northern Regional.
MoHi’s Cooper Taylor had the best day, shooting a 1-over 73 which tied him for third place out of the 55 participants. Teammates Alex Mautz and Josh Hill also achieved their goals of qualifying, shooting a 78 and 79, respectively. The fourth Coyote, Jackson Elliott, shot an 80 for the round and lost in a playoff, meaning he will be the first alternate for a spot at state.
The Knights were led by Cason McHose and his 4-over 76, good enough to tie him for fifth. Jackson Vacek and Daniel Pearson had stong outings as well, tying for sixth with rounds of 77 and punching their tickets. Kevin Wohlfarth rounded out the Fairview four, winding up with an 80 and qualifying for state after sinking a 40 foot putt on the first playoff hole.
The Class 5A State Tournament has been moved from CommonGround to Murphy Creek in Aurora due to extensive damage from the recent floods. The tournament will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
