Due to the massive flooding in Boulder and Longmont, all athletic events scheduled for Thursday and Friday in the Boulder Valley School District and the St. Vrain Valley School District have been postponed.
Early Thursday officials from both districts announced the extensive rain and flooding that soaked Boulder County would cause the postponement of all events on Thursday. That list was extended to all events through Friday for both districts in the middle of the afternoon on Thursday after conditions worsened.
“Currently we’re not scheduled to play any games on Saturday, but we’re assessing what to do with football,” BVSD athletic director Michele DeBerry said. “With soccer or some other sports we can move into the next couple weeks. We’re looking at all the options.”
Some programs already had moved football games slated to be played Thursday night, with the Rangeview at Fairview tilt getting moved to Centaurus High School on Friday at afternoon and the Summit-Silver Creek game, scheduled to be held in flood-ravaged Lyons on Friday, getting moved to Frederick. However those games, as well as the entire Friday athletic slate, have been wiped away by the rain and floods.
The Colorado High School Activities Association announced it would allow teams to reschedule football games on Monday if necessary, but such a scenario would cause a number of difficulties both logistical and physical.
“Football presents a bit of a unique challenge, because you can’t play doubleheaders and it would be a tough turnaround if we moved it to Monday,” Silver Creek coach Mike Apodaca said. “If we go Monday, we have to play again on Friday. That’s going to be really tough. But that said, we all have more important things to worry about right now.”
One confirmed rescheduled football game is the Boulder at Poudre nonconference match. Scheduled for Thursday, the Panthers instead will play Saturday at 7:30 at French Field.
Games also have been canceled at Shining Mountain and Dawson School. Longmont Christian canceled its volleyball games this weekend against Dayspring Christian and Vail Christian.
