KISSIMMEE, FLA. — After traveling to the edge of the country for a “Zero Week” game, the Silver Creek football team will be returning home with the first of what likely will be many wins of the 2013 season after knocking off Poinciana High 41-25 Thursday night in Kissimmee, Fla.

The No.-1 ranked squad in Class 3A was led by senior signal-caller Ben Sjobakken, who completed 13 of his 16 passes to the tune of 190 yards and three touchdowns. The quarterback also added a late 15-yard touchdown run to seal the victory.

The Raptors ran off the first 21 points of the game to establish a comfortable lead against the host Eagles. Senior Zane Lindsey caught a 5-yard toss from Sjobakken in the first quarter to get the Raptors on the board. Sophomore tailback Anthony Kasper added a second-quarter score when he ran into the end zone from 11 yards out, and later in the period senior lineman Levi Cecil picked off the PHS quarterback and rumbled in from 40 yards out to build a three-touchdown advantage.

“We got a little bit going early, but to be quite honest we tired out a little,” head coach Mike Apodaca said. “The heat and humidity definitely caught up to us, but we held on.”

Leading 35-13 in the fourth after a Brock Ricks 44-yard TD reception, the Raptors seemed to have the game in hand. But back-to-back rushing scores from the home team cut the lead to 10 and made things interesting. That was until Sjobakken made his way through the defense for his fourth touchdown of the night to put the game out of reach.

The Raptors will enjoy a few more days of vacation before returning home Sunday and preparing for their first intrastate battle. That will take place Sept. 7 at home against Centaurus.

“The kids did a good job of staying focused,” Apodaca said. “It has been a great trip. And it’s a heck of a lot nicer with a win.”
