Girls golf: Skyline’s Adara Pauluhn with striking distance of top 20

GRAND JUNCTION — Adara Pauluhn has a simple goal for herself entering Tuesday’s second round of the Class 5A state tournament — improve.

The Skyline sophomore had some shaky holes through her opening 18 at the Tiara Rado Golf Course, leaving her somewhat discontent. But she played strong enough in the opening round to set her within striking distance of her ultimate goal.

If Pauluhn can improve on her first day, it is almost certain she will put herself in the running for a top-20 finish in her second state tournament appearance. And leaving the course Monday, she was ready to move on.

“I’m just going to go in, forget about today (Monday) and try to do better,” she said.

Pauluhn finished at 11-over at the par-72 course to finish in 24th place. Most of her struggles holding her back from a higher finish came on the greens. Her off-target putting cost her on two holes, forcing the sophomore to gut a triple on No. 2 and a double on hole 12. She was not alone, the fast and hard greens perplexed everyone and held the entire field from shooting par or better.

Despite some bumps here and there, Meredith Bender believes her golfer has put herself in good position. The coach wants to see the sophomore tighten up her putter play and if she does expects big things when Pauluhn’s full 36-holes are played.

“She’s a good second-day player,” the coach said. “And it will be her third day in a row playing this course. She’ll really know what’s coming.”
