THORNTON — Before calling it a career in high school, Martin Wallace wanted to leave his mark. He more than did so Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center.

The Broomfield senior was at another level in the 500-yard freestyle at the Class 4A state swim championships, a fact blatantly evident when he touched the wall.

Wallace was all alone, lengths ahead of the rest of the field. But it was not where he was in the water that had the senior grinning, but where he was in the scheme of 4A swimming overall. Clocking in at 4 minutes, 31.86 seconds, Wallace broke the race’s standing record by nearly a tenth of a second.

It was a gratifying finish for a swimmer who at times in his high school career appeared snake-bitten at state.

“I’m very happy,” he said. “I had an instinct about this race and proved right.”

Wallace’s finish in the race and his 200 freestyle title helped his team to eighth place in the team competition. But settling on the longest event of high school competition was a difficult choice. The University of Missouri recruit is also a top-flight 100 butterflier and hemmed and hawed between it and the 500 all season.

There were two factors that finally swayed Wallace to the distance race.

First, he clocked a 4:25.02 at a club sectional in March in the race, giving him all the confidence that he had the tools to excel in the event. Second, the race has had a string of record breakers over the course of Wallace’s career.

“It was broken my freshman, sophomore and junior years,” he said. “I thought to myself that there was maybe an expectation — they had done it all three of my years, so I needed to step up.”

The finish erased a difficult run in state from a year ago, where Wallace was denied titles in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly by 4A-record performances. It also mended what was a frustrating start to his day, when he won the 200 freestyle, but missed his time goal.

The finish also means two Eagles now own 4A-record times, with Russel Payne’s 200 individual medley time of 1:51.40 having stood since 2004.

“Hopefully they won’t be broken for awhile,” Broomfield coach Emily Austin said.

While the last state record left Austin flying high, there was a bump up for the coach this time around. Wallace’s historic swim also came with the Eagles collecting three state championships for the first time in Austin’s affiliation with the team.

Cody Engstrom made it to the top of the podium again in diving and like Wallace was untouchable in his performance. The Brigham Young University-bound senior defended his Class 4A state title and set a new VMAC pool record with his 507.15.

“This actually feels better than my first one,” the Class 4A Diver of the Year said. “There was a lot more competition, I really had to step it up.”

David Hoffer was only nine points off the Eagle after his first eight dives. But come finals, the Mullen diver could not keep pace with Engstrom. The Broomfield senior widened the margin to 20 points, executing three final dives that score 50-plus points apiece. His final attempt was awarded 57.12 points and was punctuated by a fist pump once Engstrom broke the surface.

While Saturday’s tight race coming out of preliminaries was a driving factor for Engstrom, it was not the lone one motivating him to one of his top days on the board. Getting edged by Thompson Valley’s Tanner Williams — who placed third Saturday — for the Northern League title had the Broomfield diver on his toes.

“It made me nervous coming into today,” he said. “I knew I had to nail my dives or else I was going to lose.”
