Boys swimming: Silver Creek’s Tyler Lis takes home 200 IM title

Silver Creek sophomore Tyler Lis pumps his fist after winning the 4A state title in the 200 IM on Saturday.

THORNTON — A year ago, Tyler Lis proved to himself that he had the talent to compete in Class 4A swimming. On Saturday, the Silver Creek sophomore proved it to the rest of the state.

Lis earned the first state title of his short high school career, winning the 200-yard individual medley in a race in which he was pushed until the very finish. And while the fast pace of the field certainly had its impact on the Raptor, there were other factors that had him shooting for the top.

The seeds of his championship were sowed his freshman year, when Silver Creek’s rising star placed sixth in the event and built the confidence to compete at the highest level.

“I was really motivated today,” said Lis, who had the seventh-fastest seed time entering the finals. “This has been a goal of mine since last year and it all came together for me today.”

Lis clocked in at 1 minute, 54.46 seconds, a personal best in the individual medley, helping SCHS to a sixth-place team finish. But the sophomore had plenty driving him to the finish line, swimming against some of his most heated regular-season competition a few lanes over.

John Thorne has been a constant thorn in the Raptor’s side in Northern League competition and continued to be early in the race. The Thompson Valley sophomore aced Lis in the preliminaries, turning in Friday’s fastest IM time. But the Raptor proved to be a fast study, beating Thorne at his own game in the race.

“He’s a fast backstroker and fast flier,” Lis said. “I knew I had to go underwater to edge him. I made sure to count in my head 10 kicks on each wall. I attacked it and really went after it.”

Lis had a busy day for the Raptors, also helping the 400 freestyle relay to seventh, the 200 medley relay to fourth and placing third in the 500 freestyle. But from SCHS coach Debbie Stewart’s perspective, her first sophomore champion is just getting warmed up. Stewart believes when everything is said and done on Lis’ career he could etch his name alongside other Raptors greats, such as Nick Koerner.

“It’s like I told him, he has the chance to be a 3-peater,” she said. “It would be pretty an awesome accomplishment if he could walk out of here winning it his junior and senior years, as well.”

Stewart’s team had its best showing since its third-place in 2011, though its finish was a hair below the coach’s goal entering the championship. Stewart had ambitions of the Raptors finishing fifth, but given the competition at the meet she was not complaining with her swimmers finishing down a tick.

“The guys gave 110 percent and you can’t ask more than that, no matter what place they finished,” the coach said. “This was a fast meet, in a fast year.”

One of the efforts that most impressed the coach was Cody Hoyes. The senior’s second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 freestyles had Stewart choked up, given they showed how far the South Dakota State University recruit had come in the sport.

“When he first started high school swimming he had to do pushups when we were doing flip turns, because he couldn’t do them,” the coach said. “Now, they are one of the most awesome things in his races now.”

Hoyes was painfully close to a title in the 100 freestyle, with his 46.62-second run just a hair off champion Forrest Beesley. Hoyes was far from crestfallen after getting edged in the race by the Estes Park junior and was more than satisfied with what he had accomplished.

“I’m tremendously happy with my performances today,” he said. “It was a good way to cap my career.”
