Boys swimming: Silver Creek freshman Sam Willett impresses in 4A preliminaries

THORNTON — In his first year of high school competition, Sam Willett has made himself an indispensable part of the Silver Creek boys swim team.

The Raptors’ budding talent has been one of his team’s most productive point scorers this season and has chased down top spots meet in and out. And come Saturday’s Class 4A state swim finals, Willett will continue to prove he is among his team’s fastest rising stars.

With the shot at placing in two events at the Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center, the freshman has made more than a splash in his inaugural championship run.

“All in all, this has been a great start,” he said. “I can’t wait to see what I can do in the finals.”

Willett swam the seventh-fastest time in the 500 freestyle in Friday’s preliminaries and the ninth-fastest in the 100 breaststroke to help Silver Creek off to a strong start. The 500 has the potential to be an intriguing race for the freshman, given he will be competing against a ton of familiar faces.

In addition to teammate Tyler Lis, Willett also faces Northern League foes Blake Logan and Martin Wallace of Broomfield.

“It’s going to make it more competitive, but also more fun,” Willett said. “Logan and I have been going back and forth in the race all season.”

Silver Creek has swimmers returning to finals in eight events and two others besides the freshman aiming at two individual places apiece.

The Raptor set up for one of the team’s top finishes is senior Cody Hoyes, who Friday swam top-five times in both of his freestyle events. The sizable athlete was strong in his first individual event, finishing with a 1:45.35 in the 200 freestyle. But it was the 100 freestyle where he appeared ready to make a splash.

Hoyes’ 47.35 preliminary time in the race was just a touch away from the fastest of the day, one second off Discovery Canyon’s Luke Robert. Pleased with what he accomplished in the opening day, the senior definitely believes he has more in store for the finals.

“I was just worried about moving on today so I played it safe,” said Hoyes, who placed sixth in the 100 free at the 2012 state meet. “I’ll be lighting it up in the finals.”

Broomfield did not return quite as much overall firepower, but the Eagles roll into the finals with plenty to crow about.

The team has five individual swimmers and two relays shooting for places. But the swimmer certain to steal the spotlight is Wallace. The University of Missouri recruit already did so in the preliminaries.

Wallace turned in the fastest times in both of his individual races. His 500 freestyle time of 4:41.86 was 10 seconds faster than his seed time. And he rolls into finals as the man to beat in the 200 freestyle after turning in an automatic All-American time of 1:40.60.

“We’ll see what happens today,” he said. “I’m sure I’ll have a little bit more competition. Barrel seeding is kind of tough, because they put the fastest three kids in three different heats.”

While continually proving to be one of the fastest and most accomplished swimmers in the Colorado, Wallace has yet to claim a state title. Last season, he was aced out of a top finish by state-record swims in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

Martin won’t allow high school competition to define his swimming career. But with that said, the senior is licking his chops at adding a championship to his already impressive resume.

“Of course I want it really, really bad,” he said. “If I don’t get it, it won’t be the end of the world.”

His coach is optimistic about his chances and believes it would be a heck of a way to close a solid high school career.

“It wouldn’t be something that’s just been handed to him,” Emily Austin said. “He’s worked very hard to where he’s at. I would love to see him win two.”
